Helmet dispensers (IoT)

An ecosystem for a network of helmet kiosks: an app for parents and children with GPS monitoring and alerts, a panel for city operators, and a backend with an IoT gateway - with a full demo scenario from booking to disinfection.

Client

Municipalities (B2G) and micromobility operators (B2B), and on the user side - parents of children riding scooters and bikes.

Problem

Children under 16 must wear a helmet, but rarely carry one. Cities have no helmet rental infrastructure, and parents have no way to know whether their child arrived safely.

Scope of work

An integration prototype of the whole ecosystem: a mobile app, a web panel with roles and cities, a REST backend with an IoT gateway, helmet and kiosk emulators, an E2E test, a demo deployment, and GDPR basics.

Solution

The Flutter app has separate views for the child (rent a helmet, kiosk map, my rides, learning) and the parent (child's route, safety zones, alerts). The Next.js panel serves the city operator and the company admin: stations, helmets, events, hygiene, and geofencing, with per-city access. A FastAPI backend receives telemetry through an IoT gateway with device keys. Before any hardware existed, the whole flow - issue, return, GPS, fall, impact, battery, disinfection - ran on helmet and kiosk emulators, and an automated E2E test checks the demo scenario.

Key features

  • Kiosk map, booking, and rental activation
  • GPS route monitoring and safety zones for parents
  • Alerts: fall, impact, leaving a zone, low battery
  • City operator panel: stations, helmets, events, reports
  • Hygiene control - helmet disinfection cycles
  • City geofencing and per-city RBAC access
  • Helmet and kiosk emulators, E2E test of the demo scenario
  • GDPR: consent register, 365-day GPS data retention

Business outcome

A working prototype of the whole ecosystem with demo data for four stations in Kielce, ready to present to municipalities and operators. The next stage is physical helmet and kiosk prototypes and publishing the app in the stores.
